Sculptra® is a cosmetic facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid that helps to replace lost collagen. This treatment corrects shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds, as well as helping to plump up hollow areas in the cheeks and temples.

What is Sculptra?

Injectables are one of our top procedures at Stephens Plastic Surgery + Skincare Aesthetics of Baton Rouge, and Sculptra is the ideal option for many of our patients. This injectable restores and corrects signs of lipoatrophy (facial fat loss beneath the skin) by replacing lost volume. Lipoatrophy can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas.

What Areas Can be Improved with Sculptra?

Sculptra cannot be used around the eyes and the hands. Instead, it’s used to enhance facial volume including but not limited to:

How Does Sculptra Work?

Collagen is a key structural component that keeps the skin looking young and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases and you begin to see wrinkles and folds. Sculptra corrects these wrinkles and folds as it gradually replaces lost collagen, which can help achieve a more youthful-looking appearance.

Sculptra Technique and Treatment at Skincare Aesthetics of Baton Rouge

Sculptra injections take approximately 30 minutes. Before your treatment begins, we will cleanse your skin.

At Skincare Aesthetics of Baton Rouge, we often use a cannula (a blunt-tipped, hollow tube) instead of a needle for Sculptra because it provides us enhanced precision and control, as well as reduced complications, tissue trauma, swelling, and bruising. It also minimizes discomfort and downtime. Skincare Aesthetics of Baton Rouge is one of the few clinics in the area that offers the use of a cannula for multiple injection areas.

Before your treatment, our goal is to listen carefully to you and discuss a treatment plan that is individualized for you specifically. This means that the dosage and the locations for your injections are personalized to your needs.

You will feel a little pinch as the cannula punctures your skin, but it’s very tolerable — especially with the cannula. A topical anesthetic is available if you prefer.

Although the number of injection sessions varies from person to person, on average three injection sessions over a period of a few months are needed for Sculptra.

What to Expect After Sculptra

You will be able to go back to your normal activities immediately following your Sculptra treatment, but exercise should be avoided for a few hours.

Following injections, you may bruise or have a small amount of redness at the injection sight. Both can be easily covered with makeup. You will need to massage the injected areas after your treatment, which one of our providers will instruct you on.

The results from Sculptra are not immediate, but they are long-lasting. In a clinical study, effects lasted for up to two years after the first treatment session in most patients. No skin testing is required.

Who is a Good Candidate for Sculptra?

The best candidates for Sculptra injections are individuals who:

Are over 18
Want to improve areas of hollowness of the face
Are naturally thin with substantial hollowing
Are not finding success with other dermal fillers
Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
Are not immunocompromised
Do not have any active skin outbreaks, redness, or rashes
Are not prone to keloid formation
Are not taking blood thinners, aspirin, or other anti-inflammatories
