Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery designed to increase breast size and improve overall breast shape. This is achieved through the careful placement of breast implants or, in some cases, using the patient's own fat through fat transfer techniques. Patients have a variety of options, ranging from different implant materials to specific placement methods, all selected to complement your natural breast tissue and chest wall anatomy. The ultimate purpose is to provide a fuller, more balanced appearance that aligns with your aesthetic vision.
Breast Implants
Our Baton Rouge patients can choose from saline or silicone implants. Saline breast implants are silicone shells filled with saline solution. Silicone breast implants are silicone shells filled with silicone gel. Saline implants often require smaller incisions and are safer in the event of a rupture. Silicone breast implants can deliver a more natural result, in terms of both touch and appearance. Dr. Stephens will review your options and help you select the best implant type for your goals.
Fat Grafting
If you wish to slim down an area of your body and enhance your bustline in one procedure, fat grafting may be a better option for you. In this procedure, Dr. Stephens can use liposuction to remove fat from the thighs, abdomen, or another area. The fat is then purified and injected into the breasts. This method can also be combined with implants to refine their appearance.

On the day of your surgery, you will be cared for in our AAAASF-accredited surgical center, where your safety is our highest priority. Here is what to expect:

Breast augmentation surgery lasts about one to two hours.

Dr. Stephens will administer general anesthesia so you can sleep comfortably through your procedure.

Dr. Stephens will make incisions in inconspicuous places to minimize scar visibility. Your incisions may be made in the armpit, along the creases under the breasts, or around the areolas.

Dr. Stephens will lift each breast and create a pocket for each implant. Your chosen implant will be inserted either beneath the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Dr. Stephens often recommends placing implants behind the chest muscles, as it reduces the risk of capsular contracture and has less interference with mammograms.

After the implants have been inserted and positioned, Dr. Stephens will close your incisions, apply tape, and place bandages.
In addition to enhancing breast size, breast augmentation is a highly effective solution for several common concerns. It is frequently used to address breast asymmetry, where one breast is a different size or shape from the other. It also corrects a loss of breast volume that often occurs after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. For those with naturally small breasts or a "tubular" breast shape, the procedure provides the fullness and projection needed to create a more traditional silhouette. Additionally, it can serve as a component of breast reconstruction or revision surgery to replace older implants or correct a breast implant rupture.

While breast augmentation can enhance the size and shape of your breasts, it doesn’t do anything to address the position. If you have sagging breasts due to breastfeeding or weight loss, Dr. Stephens can combine your augmentation with a breast lift. This procedure removes excess skin to raise the breasts into a more youthful, perky position.

Dr. Stephens performs comprehensive mommy makeover procedures for patients who have experienced changes due to motherhood or significant weight loss. Dr. Stephens can tailor your mommy makeover plan to address your unique problem areas, combining procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, and more into one streamlined care plan.

Are you unhappy with your current implants? Is it time to exchange them for newer implants? Dr. Stephens offers implant exchange to remove your old implants and place new ones. We offer many sizes and types of implants and will walk you through your options so you’re satisfied with the result.
The benefits of this procedure extend far beyond the physical changes. Patients often report a significant boost in self-esteem and a renewed sense of confidence in social and professional settings. By tailoring the breast size and implant placement to your frame, Dr. Stephens can create a look that feels authentic to your body. Whether you choose round implants for maximum lift or silicone breast implants for a softer touch, the result is a more harmonious figure.
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, breast augmentation provides stable, beautiful results that can last for many years. Using modern silicone gel and advanced surgical techniques helps ensure that your new look remains soft, natural, and resilient.

Ideal candidates for breast enlargement surgery are women who are in good overall health and are non-smokers, as smoking can interfere with the healing of scar tissue. You should have realistic expectations about the outcome and a clear understanding of the recovery process. This procedure is excellent for those looking to enhance breast size or restore volume, but it may be avoided if there are active infections or untreated breast cancer. During your initial consultation, Dr. Stephens will review your medical history and evaluate your breast tissue to ensure that a surgical procedure is the safest and most effective path for you.

The immediate "wow" factor is visible right after surgery, but your final results will truly shine once the post-operative swelling subsides and the implants settle into their natural position. This process typically takes three to five months. You will notice a significant improvement in the fullness, lift, and symmetry of your bustline. These results are designed to be long-lasting, providing you with a refined silhouette that enhances your confidence for years to come. While breast implants are not lifetime devices, modern advancements in silicone gel technology have made them more durable and natural-feeling than ever before.

Are you considering silicone implants for their natural look and feel? Dr. Stephens is certified in using the innovative Keller Funnel™, a technique that allows women who choose silicone gel implants to benefit from shorter incisions and improved comfort and safety. The Keller Funnel is a lubricated funnel through which the implant can be compressed and inserted. Additionally, the Keller Funnel keeps the implant sterile with a no-touch technique that reduces the risk of infection.

Breast augmentation ultimately increases the size of the breasts, but it can also be used to improve symmetry, even out body proportions, correct breast defects, and restore volume that’s been lost due to breastfeeding or weight loss.
Good candidates for breast augmentation include patients who have the desire for larger breasts, are in good overall health, are nonsmokers, and have realistic expectations. We perform comprehensive consultations at our Baton Rouge office to determine if you’re a candidate before proceeding with surgery.
Dr. Stephens is highly skilled in incision techniques that prioritize discretion. Whether the incision is placed in the inframammary fold (the crease under the breast) or the periareolar area (around the nipple), he works to ensure the resulting scar is as thin and well-hidden as possible. Over time, these marks typically fade significantly, becoming very difficult to notice.
While an implant can add volume and provide a slight "lift" by filling out the skin, it does not correct significant drooping. If you have sagging breasts due to weight loss or nursing, Dr. Stephens may recommend an augmentation mastopexy. This combines breast augmentation with a breast lift to both increase size and move the nipple and breast tissue to a higher, more youthful position.
The term "gummy bear" refers to highly cohesive silicone-gel implants that retain their shape even if the shell is broken. They are known for their viscous silicone gel that provides a stable, predictable breast shape. These are a popular choice for patients seeking a consistent look with a very low risk of visible rippling.
If implants are placed behind the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular placement), they typically interfere less with mammograms than if they are placed in front of the muscle. Our team and your radiologist will use specific "displacement techniques" to ensure that your breast health screenings remain accurate and thorough.
Fat transfer is an excellent choice for patients seeking a modest increase in size without a silicone shell. This involves using liposuction to harvest excess fat from areas like the abdomen or thighs, purifying it, and then carefully injecting it into the breasts. It results in a very natural look and feel, though it typically provides a smaller increase in volume compared to traditional implants.
