What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia affects about 40-60 percent of men to some degree, and although it can develop in men of any age, there is no definitive cause. Gynecomastia is characterized by:

  • Excess fat in the breasts
  • Overdevelopment of glandular tissue
  • Excess breast skin
  • One breast being larger than the other, in some cases

Although there is no singular cause for gynecomastia, factors such as heredity, hormonal changes, the use of certain drugs as well as obesity can play a major role in the development of this condition.

What is Male Breast Reduction?

The goal of male breast reduction surgery is to flatten the chest and restore masculine contours. During your consultation with Dr. Stephens, your individual condition will be assessed and your procedure will be tailored to your unique specifications and preferences.

In most cases, gynecomastia surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue in the male breasts, and in some cases excess skin is also removed to improve chest contours. Depending on your individual condition, surgical excision or liposuction may be used, or a combination of both. Doctor Stephens will discuss your surgical options with you during your initial visit.

Am I a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Males who experience self-consciousness about their overgrown breasts and who are in good health may be candidates for this procedure. Doctor Stephens will assess your individual condition and determine the best course of treatment for you. Patients should be willing to adopt a lifestyle of healthy diet and exercise after male breast reduction, as future weight gain can adversely affect results.

What is Recovery Like?

After surgery, bandages will cover your incisions to protect and support your improved chest contours. Doctor Stephens will advise you on how long you should take off from work and normal activities in order to allow adequate healing as well as any aftercare instructions that will be necessary for your incision sites to reduce the risk of infection.

Swelling, bruising and mild discomfort is common after this procedure and is typically easily controlled with prescribed medication and by carefully following all post-surgical instructions.
